I was recently invited to listen to an on-line video titled - David Irving - Talking Frankly - in which he discusses his credentials as a revisionist historian, including his research into the life of Adolph Hitler. The invitation came after some months of challenging argument between us, over the exact number of Jews murdered, and the exact number of Jews killed, during World War II.
I pride myself on having an open mind. But my friend pointed out that I was being rather intellectually dishonest in that I had not taken the time to actually listen to David Irving. I will not repeat what he said to me about my claim to be informed on the holocaust and Hitler, based on my South African History, a Google search, and a reading of Wikipedia. Which includes, "Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany, systematically murdered some six million European Jews, from 1941 to 1945.
I confess to being very troubled at the mere idea of questioning the "fact" that 6 million Jews were murdered by Hitler. I consider myself a writer and publisher of important social issues. Certainly no participant in any wicked conspiracy theories.
I was curious that Google had a warning on the link saying, "The following content has been identified by the YouTube community as inappropriate or offensive to some audiences." Really? Since when does revisionist history warrant this type of comment? Censorship?
David's introduction was as boring as any history lesson I have attended. Unless you get excited by the detailed resume' of the life of a dedicated historian. But I suffered through it, while simultaneously outlining a revisionist software platform I am experimenting with. Until I noticed that I had stopped sketching. In fact I was stopping the video, taking notes, and wondering how on earth I could verify the factual accuracy of what David was saying?
There are no alternate facts. Only facts, which society surely needs to verify?
Over the next 12 months Open4Conspiracy is going to identify each claim made by David Irving in this video. And using the latest BCubed protocol, cloud computing, social media, and blockchain technology hope to reach an informed opinion of the "objective truth" of each claim. We will start with those claims that are easy to verify and progress to those that are more challenging.
On 5 September 1996, Irving filed a libel suit against Deborah Lipstadt and her British publisher Penguin Books. For publishing the British edition of Lipstadt's book, Denying the Holocaust, which was first been published in the USA in 1993. In her book Lipstadt called Irving a Holocaust denier, falsifier, and bigot, and said that he manipulated and distorted real documents.
Excerpts from High Court Judge Charles Gray's ruling ... The charges which I have found to be substantially true include the charges that Irving has for his own ideological reasons persistently and deliberately misrepresented and manipulated historical evidence; that for the same reasons he has portrayed Hitler in an unwarrantedly favourable light, principally in relation to his attitude towards and responsibility for the treatment of the Jews; that he is an active Holocaust denier; that he is anti-Semitic and racist and that he associates with right-wing extremists who promote neo-Nazism.
There is no love lost for revisionist historians by the establishment. And heaven help them if they make a factual mistake for any human cause. I do not believe it possible for a writer of 30 plus respected and accurate historical books to be 100% biased and completely wrong. I do believe we can all make mistakes and deserve a chance to correct the record.
There is a difference between belief and a willingness to write that belief. It is why we allow free speech. There is a danger that this same willingness when the historian is misled, and/or taken out of context by conspiracy theorists, leads to the baby being thrown out with the bath water. Jesus challenged the religious leaders of his time. He was crucified for pointing out their hard hearts and legalistic ways that had drifted so far from the commandments to love God and love ones neighbor given to Moses.
I do not believe that there is a grand conspiracy by an elite few to control mankind. But I do believe that humanity has drifted a long way from the teachings of Jesus. That a group think on issues has developed. That we demonize anyone who argues that the facts are not as black and white as portrayed. I propose that we use the Internet to make a fresh start. With open minds, to take what is true and learn, and to set aside that which is not. To have soft hearts with those who disagree with us.
Let us always remember with humility what happened last time we thought we were right ?
